La Belle Sauvage
Jack Spurling
La Belle Sauvage is an early example of Jack Spurling’s work. He was Christian’s father. Jack’s catalogue raisonné was last updated in 1980 with the publication of Spurling Sail and Steam, edited by Warren Moore. La Belle Sauvage was one of fifty paintings presented in Warren’s book.
In 2021 this work was sold at auction in the US and shipped to the UK for extensive restoration work undertaken at the Richard Martin Gallery.
Crofton Hall
Crofton Hall is an another early example of Jack Spurling’s work, presented in Warren’s book.
In 2025 this work was sold at auction in the US and shipped to the UK for reframing at the Richard Martin Gallery. No further restoration work attempted.
Christian Spurling ~ Picture Me Again includes a quick reference guide to 157 pictures painted by Jack, including a note of which ones were copied by Christian. The guide includes 26 paintings not included in Warren’s book, candidates for a long overdue revision to Jack’s catalogue raisonné.
